The NC Department of Motor Vehicles requires that you register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residence in the state.
After residency has been established in North Carolina, you have 60 days to obtain a state driver's license. A written exam and a road signs test is required. The need for an on the road driving test is determined by the examiner. If you are moving within the state, a change of address must be reported within 60 days.
North Carolina has a five-year license renewal program, and licenses are renewed based on birthdates, for periods of four to eight years. Fees for a Class C license (the class most drivers need to operate a personal automobile or a small truck) is $2.50 per year. Cash payment is required. Identification is required such as a valid out-of-state license with picture, birth certificate or a passport. If you want to be an organ donor, you can indicate this on the front of your driver's license.
Licenses can be obtained from the NC Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles. There are DMV registration offices scattered around town.
