Ironwoods is a subdivision centrally located in Chapel Hill. It is located between Seawell Elementary and Carrboro Elementary. It is down the street from Smith Middle School and Chapel Hill High. The neighborhood was built in the late 1980s and 90s. A few houses have recently been built on some of the remaining lots. The homes were built by local custom builders and one national builder (M/I Homes). There are approximately 150 homes that range in sizes, types and styles. The lots range in size from .25 to .75 with the bulk of them being in the .3 range. This neighborhood is hilly so you can find basement houses. The neighborhood backs to Bolin Creek with 10 miles of hiking and biking trails and is across the street from the Horace Williams Tract (recently renamed Chapel Hill North). Chapel Hill North, approximately 1000 acres, is owned by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC has plans to develop approximately 300 acres over a 50 year period with office space, research space and residential housing.
